Writing Applications that Make SQL Server 2008 Fly

Overview:

This talk presents a general overview of how to develop applications for SQL Server 2008 that perform well from the start. It’s relevant to a broad range of SQL server developers and DBAs. We cover general techniques including logical and physical database design, plus specific details about using SQL Server 2008 most effectively, with an emphasis on the latter.  We cover effective use of statistics and indexes, how to intelligently balance query compile time vs. plan optimality, pitfalls associated with use of parameters and local variables in queries and how to avoid them, effective use of constraints to speed query processing, breaking queries into pieces to work around cardinality and cost estimation problems, and the benefits and costs of compression.
